AMA Supercross and Motocross Purse
National Riders Group for Motocross

How much money do professional riders really make?

Chasing Motocross and Supercross championships can be a very lucrative business for those fortunate few at
the top. Less than 10% of National riders draw a salary. While we can't know the contract details of each rider,
what we do know is how much money riders are paid from the AMA purse. Over 90% AMA Pro riders rely on AMA
purse and contingencies to make their living, pay for parts and expenses. As you can see, most riders earn well
below the federal poverty line of $20,000 per year which doesn't even cover the costs of racing let alone pay for a
mechanic to maintain their equipment. Is it any wonder that very few can compete with the factories?
